Before coming up with a content and SEO strategy for your site you will need to do keyword research. To see what your audience is searching for is crucial in getting traffic and ranking for the right keywords. You don’t want to choose keywords that have too few searches a month and inversely you also should not select words with lots of competition. Once you have found the best keywords you will start the process of ranking them. The complete guide to keyword research will show you everything you need to know.
Understanding Keyword Research
In order to find the best keywords to use you will have to research them. This process involves using certain keyword tools such as LongTail Pro and Google Keyword Planner. You will search for phrases that are specific to your industry and analyse them to see if they are worth ranking for. The word “long tail keywords” basically means it is very specific and thus easier to rank for. “Rottweiler puppies for sale in Austin” is a lot more specific than a keyword such as “dogs”. The former would be easier to rank for and would result in visitors being very interested in purchasing what you are selling. People searching for “dogs” might only want to find pictures of dogs so most of that traffic would not be relevant to a person wanting to sell Rottweiler puppies in Austin.
By performing research we can then choose which keywords are relevant to our niche. From here we will see which keywords are worth focusing on based on the number of searches a month and the competitiveness of those searches. The keyword “Loose weight” has thousands of searches a month but it would be far too competitive to end up on the first page of Google for us. Only powerful site with lots of authority, such as Menshealth.com, can rank for these types of keywords. The opposite of this would be a keyword such as “how to walk a rottweiler, poodle and staffie together at the same time”. You could rank for it very easily but no one in the world will be searching for it so you would not get any visitors. As you can see we need to find a balance between number of searches and competitiveness of the keywords.
1. Coming Up with Effective Keywords
You probably know the basics of what keywords you want to target but you will need to use the tools to narrow it down. Keeping with the above keyword if we are targeting selling Rottweiler puppies in Austin we can use a website called Ubersuggest to give us more ideas. By using our original keyword of “Rottweiler puppies for sale Austin” it gives us another ten phrases that people are also searching for.
We can also use Google Keyword Planner to help us out. By logging into your Google account and searching for keyword ideas you are able to see similar keywords and the monthly search volume. We can filter it to only include phrases with certain words so if we are only selling puppies in Austin we might choose to include the words “Rottweiler Austin Sale”. This means we will only be getting phrases which have all three of these words in them. You can play around with this setting to help you target your market very specifically. We can then see how many searches each of these keywords get per month. As I mentioned above we want a phrase with enough traffic but not too much competition that makes ranking for it impossible. As you can see below all the searches are within 10 – 100 searches a month. Depending on your niche this might be far too few but in our case of selling puppies this is more than enough provided they are interested buyers. This appears to be the case judging on the phrases.
Now that we have a few keywords to choose from we would determine the competitiveness of those particular keywords by using LongTail Pro Keyword Research Tool. Refer to the video below showing you exactly how to analyse competitiveness. Essentially LongTail Pro looks at the sites which come up on the first page of Google and determines how strong they are. Authoritative websites are those which have lots of trust from readers and Google knows this. The more backlinks a website has to it from other strong powerful sites in the same industry the higher it will be ranked. So if your website is targeting the keyword “rottweiler puppies for sale austin” and your competitor is targeting the same phrase the results will depend mainly on backlinks. If your competitor has hundreds of links from other Rottweiler breeders from around the world Google will assume he is well respected and rank his site higher than yours. If his site has hundreds of different pages all with lots of high quality content then Google will also assume it is a better if yours only has a few pages.
We can also assess the competition manually by searching for the keyword on Google. With our current phrase we can see that quite a few of the top results are from big websites such as Craigslist, Oodle and eBay. It can be hard to outrank these sites as the domain carries a lot of power, domain authority (DA), but the individual page authority (PA) is low. I recommend you use these tools Moz and Semrush to analyse your competitors.
If we open up Moz we can see that Oodle has a very high DA of 66 but the PA is only 1. This means we should be able to outrank it quite easily. Whereas if we look at Lonecreek Rottweilers we can see the DA is lower at 22 but the PA is 17. There is no rule set in stone but typically if PA is below 25 and they do not have lots of high quality backlinks it should be possible to out rank them. We can use Semrush to analyse the backlinks of the particular website.
Another useful metric is that called Trustflow (TF) which we can find on a website called Majestic. It basically measures how much “trust” is flowing to a particular page. So if your competitors page had lots of other powerful sites linking to it Google would assume it has lots of trust and give it a high result. We also aim to focus on keywords where the competitors have a TF of below 25. For Lonecreek we can see they have a TF of 17 so this means we should be able to out rank them in theory. You would perform the same test on all of the top 10 results in Google and create a spreadsheet for the various DA, PA and TF results. You can do this for all your keyword phrases and then determine which offer you the best value. If one phrase is too competitive on Google then exclude it and don’t waste your time on it.
Once you have researched all variations of the keywords you want to target and have chosen your winners you will then need to rank them. Typically each keyword will have its own article where you write content around that respective phrase. So you could write an article with the keyword “Rottweiler puppies for sale in Austin”. This article could be about what buyers should look out for and help them distinguish the difference between a good ethical breeder and a back yard breeder.
The keyword would be included in the article along with variations of the phrase and synonyms to make it look more natural. You should be writing new articles on a regular basis in the beginning as this improves your SEO ranking as Google recognizes that you are providing content. Certain sites will create a few pages then sit back and not touch the site for months which Google understands and does not like.
You cannot use the same long tail keyword over and over because Google will know you are trying to trick them. Make it natural by using other phrases such as “German Rottweiler litter”, “Austin Rottweiler puppies playing”, “Rottweiler breeder in Texas Austin”.
